At Thursby Primary School , reading is at the heart of our curriculum. We believe that learning to read – and learning to love reading – opens doors to every other area of learning and enriches children’s lives.
Our approach begins with a strong foundation in phonics, using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds, to ensure that all pupils develop the essential skills for decoding and fluency. As children grow in confidence, they are introduced to a wide range of high-quality texts that spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and broaden vocabulary.
We carefully select books that reflect our diverse community and support both academic learning and emotional development. Reading is celebrated across the school and the curriculum and our children have access to high-quality texts that support a love for reading. Our aim is for every child to see themselves as a reader – confident, engaged, and ready to explore the world through books.
