Writing
Writing at Thursby Primary School
At Thursby Primary School, we want every child to become a confident, capable and enthusiastic writer. Our writing curriculum emphasises secure transcription skills, strong composition, and a clear writing process that helps children craft purposeful, well-structured texts.
Talk for Writing
We follow the Talk for Writing approach across the school. Children learn to internalise language patterns through oral rehearsal, actions, story maps and model texts. This helps them build a rich vocabulary, develop sentence fluency and understand how different genres work. Through shared writing and clear modelling, teachers demonstrate how writers plan, draft, edit and improve their work.
Teaching the Skills of Writing
Children are taught the full range of writing skills in a carefully sequenced way:
Transcription skills
Accurate spelling, handwriting and sentence construction are taught explicitly so children can write with fluency and accuracy.Composition
Children learn how to plan, organise and structure their ideas; develop detail; make effective vocabulary and grammar choices; and adapt writing for audience and purpose. The Writing Process
Pupils are guided through planning, drafting, revising and editing. They are taught to reflect on their writing, respond to feedback and make purposeful improvements.
Reading and Vocabulary at the Heart
High-quality texts are central to our English curriculum. Children encounter rich vocabulary and ambitious models of language through reading, which they draw on in their own writing. Oral rehearsal, partner talk and vocabulary exploration support children in shaping and refining their ideas.
Our Aim
By the time they leave Thursby, children can write with confidence, clarity and creativity. They understand both the technical skills and the craft of writing, and are ready to meet the demands of writing in secondary school and the wider world.
