Phonics at Thursby Primary School
We place a strong emphasis on developing reading skills from the earliest stages of education.
From the moment children join our school, they begin to experience and appreciate the rich world that reading opens up.
Our vision is to ensure that phonics and reading are accessible to every child, regardless of background or ability, including those who may find reading more challenging. Our aim is that all pupils leave Thursby School as fluent, confident readers who read not only for purpose but also for pleasure.
At Thursby, we follow the Little Wandle phonics scheme. Little Wandle is a comprehensive and structured scheme, delivered consistently across the school, and it is highly effective in enabling pupils with SEND to make progress alongside their peers.
For those who need additional support in Key Stage 2, targeted ‘keep up’ sessions are provided. These short, focused sessions are based on Little Wandle assessments and ensure children continue to build the skills they need. Once pupils have successfully completed Phase 5, they progress to developing their spelling skills through the school’s Spelling Shed programme.
Additional information regarding Little Wandle, including free resources for parents and carers can be found via the Little Wandle website which can be accessed via the link below.
